Even before eight o’clock the next morning, the household on the smallholding was in full movement. Just like the evening before, Fran was the only one in the kitchen. She was preparing a champagne breakfast, while Annie had to stay outside to keep Fred company. He insisted.

Later that day, Annie and Fran relaxed outside in the sun, on a blanket.

“Didn’t you mind Fred going out with me?” Annie asked Fran.

“No, I didn’t. I knew he wasn’t doing this for himself, but for us,” was Fran’s surprising answer.

“Didn’t you feel jealous?”

“No.”

The conversation moved to the movie that Fred and Annie saw at the cinema.

“You know,” Fran said, “the funny thing about that is Fred doesn’t even like to go to the movies. He never even watches movies on television.”

“Really?”

Annie was stunned. A warm feeling of love for Fred surged through her. That he went to the movies with her even though he didn’t like it! Surely his feelings must be real if he did something like that for her.

Annie didn’t realize that going to the movies was part of Fred’s game to break her resistance.

“Fred suggested we move to the smallholding, my children and I,” Annie blabbed.
